The Medical Center, Dr. Henri Gerard Desgranges was born in the aftermath of the untimely death of the surgeon, Doctor Henri Gerard Desgranges in 1993; an authentic son of Petit Goave he was a remarkable man and his medical career was successful beyond what anyone could have predicted. He was a doctor without borders, and traveled the world improving health institutions throughout Africa. He lived by principles that are often termed “old fashioned”, and he gave generously of his wealth. Throughout his life he maintained a direct interest in people and institutions conceived to improve the life of others. There was a rich complexity to him that impressed everyone who knew him. By his generosity and his respect for others, he transcended factions to better discover human values. His dream was to create a free clinic in his hometown of Petit-Goave.
The HGD Foundation is a non profit organization registered in Haiti and in the United States.
The HGD Medical Center is an outpatient clinic, which provides medical care to the residents of Petit Goave and more importantly those living in the more rural districts, including Chabanne where it is located. The HGD Medical Center also provides emergency care services, with its ambulance which is able to transport critical cases to the local hospital in Petit Goave or to Port au Prince. The medical center provides medical care with a focus on primary care and community medicine. Through our health agent program and mobile clinics, we are able to provide services to the hard to reach districts in the mountainous surrounding area. Twice a week, the clinic is centered and focused on providing care to pregnant women and children less than 5 years of age. Through this initiative we have recognized the great need for a maternity center as well as labor and delivery unit in Chabanne. We are currently working on expanding our services and will hopefully complete this project in late 2012.
All students from EVL receive free medical care and treatment from our medical center-including physical exams and immunization.
Ecole Village Lucina (EVL) was founded in 1998 by Maryse Desgranges Desgrottes; and is located in Chabanne, a district of Petit Goave. EVL was named after Lucina Seme Desgranges, the late mother of Dr. Gerard Desgranges; She was an honorable citizen to her hometown and country, who believed that every child has the right to an education, health, and a happy home. Known as the “poto mitan” to everyone in her family, and in her community, she lived through example: always willing and ready to help those in need, always ready to lend an ear, and unselfishly giving . She is greatly missed, but her memory and vision lives on through Ecole Village Lucina.
EVL is an affiliation of the health center and is located on the same grounds as the clinic. Since it’s opening EVL has provided free education, and now runs up to the 6th grade. We prepare students for the national exam so that they may continue on to junior high school and higher levels of education. We currently provide uniforms, school supplies, meals as well as free immunizations and health care through our partnered health clinic.
With $100 USD a student can go to school for one year-this includes full tuition, school supplies and meals. If you are interested in sponsoring a student please click on the Donate link and indicate that your donation is to sponsor a child. We will send you the corresponding information directly.
